THE INSPIRATION
You already know Ikigai » Now it’s time to find out about Yarigai (やり甲斐).
The word yarigai compounds the following two Japanese kanji characters:
- yari (やり or 遣り) for “manage” or “get through”, and
- kai (甲斐) for "effect, result, fruit, worth, use, benefit"
In order to appreciate the significance of the term, it’s perhaps best to start with the suffix kai (甲斐), which is pronounced gai in combinations with other words. The word kai comes from the Japanese word for "shell", which in ancient Japan (Heian Period 794 to 1185) was extremely valuable, being used as a form of currency. That association of value is still inherently seen in the modern usage of the word. Thus, when combined with yari it produces yarigai, meaning “something is worth doing it.”
Yarigai can be thought of as activities that allow one to feel ikigai, or the source of value in a person's life,
More interpretations:
- Feel a sense of satisfaction (in doing a task)
- Feel (a task) challenging
- Feel (a task) worthwhile
- Feel (a task) rewarding
Yarigai - The Japanese secret to deriving satisfaction from a task. What’s your yarigai?
